Today we move on from Bath and head for Liverpool but before we left here I wanted to do the last couple things on my list for Bath. I had asked our hotel the night before if they would keep our bags because we knew we wouldn’t be able to make it back before check out. Thankfully they offered that service and we left for our morning itinerary.
First up, the Roman baths.
So interesting and still hot.
I was surprised about the layers of different rooms. I thought there was only one big hot bath, there were several. Somebody thought ladies and men should not bathe together, and they were not wrong. Nobody needed some sleazy Roman to make eye contact and head your way with their junk out while you’re trying to relax. Anyway there was also a gym, sauna, cold plunge pool, swimming pool, and other rooms. The funniest thing was reading the curses that they found from people. “I curse the person who stole my tunic, may they die and never rest again.” There were so many others, it was great. It was so neat to learn about how they got the water in and the mechanics they implemented. We got to see underneath the baths and wander around through those various rooms. It smelled heavily of rotten eggs, sulfur, which made sense knowing the water was coming from some boiling spring in the ground. We also got to taste some of the “healing waters.” That is also something that just needs to be done once, it tasted like air down there smells. We did just walk this on our own but there are guided tours to join and everyone got a phone-like thing that was programmed to your language and tell interesting information about what you were seeing. After that we headed up to the Jane Austen center. I am a fan so I was excited to see what they had going on there. The employees were dressed in regent costumes and spoke like they did. It was informative. I did not know her history exactly so that was interesting. I think if I had a girlfriend who wanted to put the dresses on and have tea we would have been there much longer.
Walking back to our hotel to gather our belongings we noted how big this city is and how much more we could have explored there if we had more time. Such is life, we headed down the streets of Bath with our luggage to the train station. Onto the next adventure.
