Castle tour day and a sprinkling of villages

Today we got up early and walked over to the royal mile to meet up with our small tour group.

First stop breakfast at a bakery/coffee shop/sandwich place. I tried a traditional Cornish pasty, pretty good. Did it taste like beef stew, yes. Would it taste better warmed, I feel like also yes but it didn’t happen, still good. Hubby got a crois-nut, I don’t know how to spell that but it’s a cross between a croissant and a donut. Also a pastry called yum yum and a chocolate muffin for later in our day. We're ready. Fourteen other people on the tour and tour guide Tom.

Lots of history chat and sights to see on our first stop of the day at the village of Falkland. Pretty town, easy to walk, cannot get lost.

Same goes for the second stop, Culross. Interesting history, first part of a pilgrimage, under the river mining operation-did not end well, and some filming locations for shows and such.

On to my favorite parts of the day, Doune castle. I am a big geek for movies and this place was center stage for one of my favorites, Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I think they said they used this castle as four different places in the movie, just from different angles. Did I buy coconuts from the gift shop, yes! And it was wonderful to clap them together in and around the castle.

We passed by Stirling castle.

We got to see the Kelpies. I had hoped we could make it there by bus in the evening but it takes an hour there and an hour back with a 2 mile walk there and back. I could not convince hubby this was needed. Seeing from a distance from the M9 was ok, I guess. Insert long sad sigh, the really dramatic kind.

A short stop at Midhope castle where I met a friendly gentleman at a coffee cart. He talked me into this Empire Biscuit, it didn’t take very much convincing by the way. And then we walked up and around the castle grounds.

Last stop was for “the ship that never sailed,” Blackness castle. Really cool place with tons of history and taken care of.

Back to Edinburgh for dinner and an early night because it was a lovely long day out.
Here's a few more from the day.
