Match day

This is why we’re here. The time has come to see the magic of Liverpool football club at Anfield. We took a black taxi out to the stadium which was fun.

We booked a tour of the stadium before the match. The guy running it was a passionate fan. He was great, dedicated, and loyal to his team without a doubt.

Our tickets for the match included a few hours of pre-game in the Carlsberg Dugout Anfield Road lounge. That got us one beer a piece at half time and unlimited food from the five food stalls they catered until the match started. I got an announcer in the lounge to say happy birthday to the hubby because this was his birthday gift from last year technically. I also got a couple autographs from two previous players. The food did not disappoint. We tried a chicken burger-pretty good, fried rice with coconut curry sauce and a samosa-yum, chipolatas with onion jam and sliced potatoes-good, frangipane tart with raspberry sauce-delicious, and halloumi-did not try because there was no Lactaid around.

We went to our seats and watched the 61,000 people stadium fill up completely. The Liverpool fans sing “You’ll never walk alone,” at the beginning of every match. The hubby got a bit teary-eyed. That song and this team mean so much to him. This game also marked the anniversary of the Hillsborough match disaster from 1989, there was a minute of silence in remembrance. There also other memorials throughout Liverpool and a documentary or two. Back to the match, Liverpool were playing Westham. There were three goals scored by Liverpool but the score at the end of the match was 2-1. Someone did an oops and got an own-goal for the other team. The energy of that place is incredible. They have chants for almost every player. A really great excitement about the place. It was the experience of a lifetime.

We ended up catching a double-decker bus to get back to the hotel, standing room only. Some of us were hungry after the excitement of the day so we stopped at McDonald’s because we were asked to do a science experiment. The food was disappointing but isn’t every McDonald’s experience that way. I did manage to get the prize toy my son was looking for to finish a set, silly I know.

A few more from the day:
